Art Under Fire is a graphic novel by Alina Borysova (@alina.boryso), a graphic designer and artist from Kyiv, Ukraine. She finished HGK Basel in 2024 and now based in Berlin.
What is the graphic novel about?
On March 25, 2024, in Kyiv, Ukraine, a fragment of a missile shot down by air defense forces fell onto the Boychuk Academy of Arts, destroying part of the academic building. The event was reported in the news alongside many other instances of destruction during the war. Yet much remains outside the media frame.
This graphic novel tells the stories of three real people you won’t read about in the news: a teacher and two students, and how they experienced the strike on the Academy. Each of them was in a different place and lived through the same event in their own way. The author studied at this academy, knew people who were there, and decided to tell their stories — three perspectives on a single moment.
During the event, the author will share insights into the creative process, from a student project to securing funding, as well as her motivation for working on it. There will also be a Q&A session with the audience and an opportunity to purchase a copy of the book.
The event will be held in English.

• створювався мальопис — від ідеї до реалізації;
• трансформувати досвід війни у візуальну комунікацію;
• використовувати комікс як метод культурної дипломатії;
