Transcending Legacies
This concert celebrates Bi Kidude, which means "little granny". She is widely considered one of the greatest East African musicians of all time and was a guardian of centuries-old Swahili musical forms, including the classical courtly music of Zanzibar (taarab) and the secret, women-only ritual traditions of the island Unguja (unyago). Her knowledge, her voice, and her presence have shaped generations of musicians.
Transcending Legacies is a project that honours the legacy of elders whose work has had a lasting impact on artists today and generations to come. The performance at free flow festival marks its second edition. Artists from different disciplines come together to create a shared work, inspired by one central question: how has Bi Kidude's work shaped their own practice, and how does it live on within it?
