How can a school of fish, a flock of birds or a crowd move and make decisions as if they were a single organism?

Each individual has access to only limited information. Yet simple interactions can give rise to coordinated movement, rapid decision-making and a form of collective intelligence.

Iain D. Couzin, a specialist in collective behaviour at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and the University of Konstanz, will show how scientists study these phenomena through automated tracking, reconstructing what animals perceive, and immersive virtual reality.
