Discover the Divine Harmony of Abhanga Singing

What is this Workshop About?

This workshop is a hands-on journey into the art of singing Abhangas. These are powerful devotional poems that blend rhythmic and melodic energy with deep spiritual philosophy. Participants will learn the core melodies, emotional expressions, rhythms and percussion of Abhang, history and tradition that define this beautiful art form. This workshop offers a welcoming space to expand your musical horizons and connect with Indian Raag Music.

Language: The entire workshop is conducted in English.

What are Abhangas?

  • Devotional Poetry: Sacred songs dedicated to Lord Vitthal a diety with a reverred seat and pilgrimage site in Pandharpur, Maharashtra in India
  • Cultural Heritage: A cornerstone of Maharashtra's rich musical legacy.
  • Warkari Tradition: Rooted in the centuries-old, egalitarian pilgrimage movement.
  • Saintly Wisdom: Written by legendary saints like Tukaram, Namdev, and Janabai.

Who can join?

  • Beginners: No previous musical training is required.
  • Non-Practitioners: Open to anyone curious about this cultural tradition.
  • All Musicians: Artists from any musical genre can join. (Vocalists, Instrumentalists, Percussionists)

Seating Arrangement: Floor seating (Please bring your own pillows) and limited chairs.

Session 1: Snehal Limaye-Phatak: Vocal exercises, Melodic variations

Session 2: Dr. Shreyas Joglekar: Emotive content and expressions in Abhangas

Break (Tea and snacks included)

Session 3: Charudatta Diwan: History of Abhnaga singing and the Warkari tradition

Session 4: Collective Abhanga singing and Naam Gajar
