Prejudice and discrimination are pervasive in our society. With the rapid evolution of technology, the ethics of these systems have come into question. Especially with the rise of artificial intelligence, it is critical to examine how technologies may contain insidious discriminatory algorithms.
Join us for a lecture and discussion with Professor Safiya Noble exploring how modern technologies uphold biases against marginalized communities. All portions of the event will be held in English, but the lecture slides will also be translated to German.

For the 3rd Annual Emilie Jäger Lecture, we welcome Professor Safiya U. Noble – the David O. Sears Presidential Endowed Chair of Social Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Our esteemed speaker is also the Director of the Center on Race & Digital Justice and Co-Director of the Minderoo Initiative on Tech & Power at the UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry (C2i2). Finally, Professor Noble is the author of the best-selling book on racist and sexist algorithmic harm in commercial search engines – Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (NYU Press) and was a 2020 nominee for the Global Future Council on Artificial Intelligence for Humanity.
About the Emilie Jäger Lecture
Emilie Jäger (1926-2011) was a geologist and the first female professor at the phil.-nat. Faculty. The Emilie Jäger Lecture – organized by the Aquatic Ecology & Evolution Lab and the Faculty's Equal Opportunities Commission – serves as a platform to discuss issues of equal opportunities and diversity at the University of Bern.
