Man’s Desire and Fleeting Beauty is a highly entertaining short allegory – a farce with a twist at the end.  Translated from the 16th century Dutch Rhetoricians’ play Een esbattement van sMenschen Sin en Verganckelijcke Schoonheit, it presents the efforts of the comical characters Fashion and Custom to encourage the passion of Man’s Desire for the alluring Fleeting Beauty. The Rhetoricians' plays were short pieces written and performed in competitions between rhetorician's guilds in the Low Countries.  A charming frame to this play is provided by a Prologue and Epilogue in which Dutch citizens discuss the performance.
