What is event cancellation insurance and what does it cover?

Overview:

What is event cancellation insurance?

Event cancellation insurance is part of the event insurance family. This also includes event liability insurance, which you may already have, but should not be confused with cancellation insurance. Normal event insurance or event liability insurance covers claims for damages from third parties in the event of personal injury or property damage that occur during the organisation of an event, but not event cancellation. Cancellation insurance, on the other hand, protects organisers against financial disadvantages caused by the cancellation or interruption of an event.

What does cancellation insurance cover?

Cancellation insurance for events insures an organiser against financial losses caused by a cancellation. This is because if an event is cancelled at short notice, booked suppliers still have to be paid or you are left with high cancellation costs.

The following cases are insured:

  • Weather-related event cancellation (danger to life and limb, impossible event set-up or access to the venue)
  • Non-availability of the location (fire, power failure, etc.)
  • Official ban (cancellation/cancellation by the police due to terror warnings/threats)
  • Piety (cancellation due to moral reasons e.g. accident during event)

What is not insured or what is not covered?

Reasons leading to an interruption or cancellation for which the organiser is responsible are not insured (e.g. poor or negligent planning).

Not insured are:

  • cancellation of the event if the artist does not appear.
  • cancellation or termination of the event due to hooliganism.
  • cancellation of the event if the audience is not interested (lack of success).
  • Events involving high-risk sports such as bungee jumping, river rafting, paragliding
  • Events with a duration of more than seven days
