E: One of the most famous realizations of Soviet brutalism, Kiev’s Flying Saucer is undergoing a period of radical transformation of its immediate surroundings and perhaps even of itself. Florian Yuriev’s works are exceptional in their form, their work with space, and interdisciplinarity. In addition to architecture, he is intensively involved in music and visual arts, which are also interwoven into his buildings. Now in his advanced age, he is fighting with the help of young architects to preserve the original form and qualities of this building against the megalomaniacal project of an influential investor. The ongoing construction work on the neighboring shopping center is creepingly materializing the imminent threat of the redevelopment of the Flying Saucer and the fatal gap between consumption and culture.

Neben der Architektur beschäftigt er sich intensiv mit Musik und bildender Kunst, die ebenfalls in seine Bauten einfliessen. Nun, in fortgeschrittenem Alter, kämpft er gemeinsam mit jungen Architekten dafür, die ursprüngliche Form und Qualität dieses Gebäudes gegen das megalomanische Projekt eines einflussreichen Investors zu bewahren. Die laufenden Bauarbeiten am benachbarten Einkaufszentrum verdeutlichen zunehmend die drohende Gefahr der Umgestaltung des Flying Saucer und die fatale Kluft zwischen Konsum und Kultur.
