Taking Cocoa Back: Power, Land and Self-Determination

Nana Aduna II (Ohene Cocoa, Ghana) takes us on a journey to the heart of cocoa production – a place where colonial structures are still felt, yet new paths are emerging. Starting from his cocoa farm in Ghana’s Eastern Region, he shows how cocoa farmers, after decades of being told by colonial powers where, how and how much to produce for Europe, are now taking production into their own hands and creating value at origin. Instead of seeing cocoa only as a raw material for chocolate, he opens our eyes to diverse products and to a different relationship with this “brown gold”.

Through his eco-tours on the farm, Nana makes visible what power and monopoly feel like within the global cocoa system – and how a more inclusive, people-centered ecosystem could look. With images, stories and impressions from his plantation, he raises awareness for the reality of origin and invites the audience to rethink chocolate and cocoa: moving away from pure raw-material logic towards self-determination, diversity and genuine participation of producers.
