Understanding the anatomy of movement

Weekend Two: 13th/14th September 2025

The Anatomy of Shape - Exploring the relationship between form and function

  • By delving further into the detailed anatomy of the lower body we reveal the importance of bone shape and muscle architecture. Using some of the latest research on bone we will see how our structure refines itself to deal with the forces it has to manage.
  • Understanding tensegrity requires us to understand 4-dimensional function of the bone and soft tissues, how they both transfer force and how their roles match their architecture. But it is not just that the architecture matches their function - their function is part of what shapes the tissues, especially the bones. Our exploration of shape will refer to some of the latest articles published by Steven Levin and go further by putting it into a wider context.
  • Fascial elasticity has been a focus for many schools for the last few years but elasticity is only one of many in-built efficiency mechanisms used by the soft tissues. During this weekend we will see how the muscles and their associated fascial tissues have an interdependent relationship with the strengths of one compensating for the apparent weaknesses of the other.

During this weekend we will see how the muscles and their associated fascial tissues have an interdependent relationship with the strengths of one compensating for the apparent weaknesses of the other.
  • All of the theory will relate to real-life movement and the many movement and palpation exercises will help us put theory into practice. Each of the explorations will further enhance our learning through feeling and touching on the tissues being discussed.
  • By the end of this weekend attendees will be familiar with the influence of tissue shape and how it relates to function, with the realities of stress, strain and stiffness, and what those terms really mean. This weekend brings the science into focus in ways that make sense and can be applied to practice
