Stoos Ridge Hike

🏔️ ESN FHNW goes hiking!

Join us for an unforgettable day in Stoos, home to the world's steepest funicular and one of the most spectacular ridge trails in Switzerland! 🌄

We'll travel together from Olten and ride the record-breaking Stoosbahn up to the car-free mountain village of Stoos. From there we'll take the chairlift up to Klingenstock and walk the famous ridge trail to Fronalpstock — a peak in the Schwyz Alps, in the canton of Schwyz, rising near the south-eastern corner of Lake of the Four Forest Cantons. After soaking in the panorama (and our celebration drink 🍹) at the summit, we'll walk back down to the village, ride the funicular into the valley, and head home together. ⛰️✨

⏱️ The day in a nutshell:
🚆 06:00 — Meet at Olten station
🚆 06:30 — Train from Olten to Schwyz
🚌 08:07 — Bus 501 from Schwyz Bahnhof to Schwyz Stoosbahn (valley station), arriving 08:24
🚠 08:40 — Funicular (Stoosbahn) up to Stoos village

🚡 09:30 — Optional chairlift (Klingenstockbahn), as an alternative to hike, up to Klingenstock. NOT included, pay on site!
🥾 ~08:45 — Start hike up to Klingenstock (~2h)
🥾 ~11:00 — Start the ridge hike, Klingenstock → Fronalpstock (~2h)
🍹 ~13:00 — Reach Fronalpstock → break, lunch & celebration drink at the summit
🚶 ~14:30 — Walk back down from Fronalpstock to Stoos village (~2h)
🚠 ~17:10 — Funicular (Stoosbahn) down from Stoos to the valley station
🚌 17:59 — Bus 501 from Schwyz Stoosbahn to Arth-Goldau
🚂 17:59 — Train from Arth-Goldau to Luzern
🚂 19:21 — Train from Luzern to Olten
🏡 20:10 — Arrive back in Olten

(Heads-up: it's a long day with an early start — come well-rested! 😴)

🥾 Hike details:

• Moderate difficulty
• It's an exposed mountain ridge — please bring sun protection, water and a warm layer, as there's no shade up there and it can get windy.
• Please wear appropriate hiking or trekking shoes. Students who don't wear appropriate shoes (for example flip flops, heels or similar) will not be accepted for the hike, since it's very dangerous with such shoes.
• Lunch, snacks and drinks during the day are not included and not provided. Everyone is responsible for their own. We recommend bringing a packed lunch, as options on the mountain are limited and pricy!

💰 Price:
CHF 15: Students WITHOUT ESN Card and WITHOUT GA Travel Card
CHF 10: Students WITH ESN Card but WITHOUT GA Travel Card
For Free: Students WITH GA Travel Card (please note that only a regular GA Travel Card is valid, GA Night DOES NOT count as a GA Travel Card holder)

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Students from Basel and Brugg are asked to organize their train ride and ticket from Basel / Brugg to Olten by themselves, since our trip starts only in Olten.

What is included in the ticket price?
🚆 Train ticket for the full day from Olten and back
🚠 Mountain transport (Stoosbahn funicular + chairlift to Klingenstock)
🍹 Celebration drink during the hike

📍 Meeting Point: Olten Train Station – Saturday, 11 July 2026 at 06:00 (it's an early start, so please be on time! ⏰)

🕗 Registration deadline: Sunday, 5 July 2026, 23:59

🌦️ Weather note: If conditions are bad, we may adapt the route/destination — your ticket will remain valid.

⚠️ Please note: Due to SBB School Group Tickets, for every 8 participants, a maximum of 2 can be over 25. If we don't reach the right proportion, we cannot guarantee spots for participants over 25. We also need at least 10 participants for the trip to happen — if fewer sign up, the trip will be cancelled. (Example: if 14 people register and 6 are over 25, only 2 of those spots can be guaranteed.)
