Mit Platero y yo schuf Juan Ramón Jiménez zwischen 1907 und 1916 eine der poetischsten Prosadichtungen der spanischen Literatur. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die andalusische Heimat – geprägt von existenziellen Krisen und innerer Wandlung – entfaltet sich in der Figur des silberfarbenen Esels Platero eine zarte, tiefgründige Reflexion über Kindheit, Natur, Vergänglichkeit und die Schönheit des Augenblicks. Für sein lyrisches Schaffen wurde Jiménez 1956 mit dem Nobelpreis für Literatur ausgezeichnet.
Diese fein nuancierte Sprachwelt inspirierte den italienischen Komponisten Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, der 1960 insgesamt 28 Episoden des Werkes vertonte. In einer sensiblen, farbenreichen Tonsprache lässt er die poetischen Bilder lebendig werden: mal impressionistisch schimmernd, mal erzählerisch klar, bisweilen sogar lautmalerisch. Dabei geht seine Musik über eine bloße Illustration hinaus – sie greift die Stimmungen des Textes auf, vertieft sie und entfaltet eine eigene, imaginative Klangwelt.
Ein Abend zwischen Literatur und Musik, der die leisen Zwischentöne des Lebens hörbar macht.
