Panel discussion: Power and Monopoly: Who truly owns chocolate?

Chocolate is pleasure, culture and symbol – but also a question of power. Who actually decides what “chocolate” is? Who sets cocoa prices, who profits from global trade – and who carries the risks?
This panel explores the invisible structures behind this sweet product. It examines how economic interests, political decisions and cultural narratives interact when it comes to defining identity, origin and sustainability. How are trade monopolies created in global supply chains, and in what ways do colonial patterns persist to this day? Which actors decide what information reaches the public – and what remains hidden from view?
Representatives from business and civil society from cocoa-producing and chocolate-consuming countries will discuss how responsibility, transparency and fairness work in the chocolate sector.
