On their debut album Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow, Zurich-based artists Magda Drozd and Nicola Genovese, as Sopraterra, offer exactly what’s announced: seven compositions which, as they unhurriedly flow into each other, mark potential entry points to discover what might be lying underneath. By choosing Sopraterra, which translates to “above the earth” in Italian, as their shared project’s name, Sopraterra indicate their own position in this archeological-looking endeavor, hinting at the potential for sonic explorations to produce deeply submerged discoveries. Sopraterra’s debut which will be released on the 14th March is jointly published by La Becque Editions and Präsens Editionen.
Sopraterra’s object of inquiry isn’t easily grasped, traversing histories and blending influences alike. In a time-line-bending manner, musical signifiers from the past, along with specific tonal scales lifted from baroque and medieval music, get digitally synthesized. Rather, the harmonies of late medieval Ars Nova or the transcendent elegance of Baroque chamber music lend their emotional qualities to perceived ideas of old times. Oscillating between ambient and drone, the album’s seven brooding compositions bring primal connections to a universally shared past to the surface. In its multi-directional positioning, Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow makes the case for embracing the confusion of warped time and paying attention to all that’s rather felt than seen.

Auf ihrem Debütalbum Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow bieten die in Zürich ansässigen Künstler:innen Magda Drozd und Nicola Genovese als Sopraterra genau das, was der Titel verspricht: sieben Kompositionen, die sich langsam ineinander fügen und mögliche Einstiegsportale markieren, um zu entdecken, was darunter liegen könnte. Mit der Wahl des Namens Sopraterra, der auf Italienisch „über der Erde“ bedeutet, verweist Sopraterra auf ihre eigene Position in diesem archäologisch anmutenden Unterfangen und deuten darauf hin, dass klangliche Erkundungen tief verborgene Entdeckungen zu Tage fördern könnten. Das Debüt von Sopraterra, das am 14. März erscheint, wird gemeinsam von La Becque Editions und Präsens Editionen veröffentlicht.
Sopraterras Objekt der Untersuchung ist nicht leicht zu fassen, es durchquert Geschichten und vereint verschiedene Einflüsse. In zeitverschiebender Manier werden musikalische Signifikanten aus der Vergangenheit zusammen mit spezifischen Tonleitern aus der Barock- und mittelalterlichen Musik digital synthetisiert. Als Klangmaterie ist das Ergebnis eindeutig ein Produkt der Gegenwart: eine Sammlung elektro-akustischer Kompositionen, die in ihrem Kern experimentell bleiben, auf Genres wie Post-Rock, Shoegaze oder Psychedelic verweisen und zugleich akustische Erinnerungen an alte Zeiten hervorrufen. Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow zieht sowohl rückwärts als auch vorwärts. Ohne jemals ein didaktisches Hörerlebnis zu erzwingen, werden musikalische Motive und Archetypen ausgiebig ausgelotet. Allerdings ist hier keine wissenschaftliche Ambition im Spiel. Vielmehr verleihen die Harmonien der spätmittelalterlichen Ars Nova oder die transzendente Eleganz der barocken Kammermusik den Vorstellungen von alten Zeiten ihre emotionalen Qualitäten. Zwischen Ambient und Drone oszillierend, bringen die sieben nachdenklichen Kompositionen des Albums ursprüngliche Verbindungen zu einer universell geteilten Vergangenheit an die Oberfläche. In seiner multidirektionalen Positionierung plädiert Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow dafür, die Verwirrung der verzerrten Zeit zu umarmen. Und dafür, all dem Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken, was man eher fühlt als sieht.
