Im Zentrum von Letters from Panduranga und How to Improve the World stehen indigene Gemeinschaften und ihre drohende Auslöschung. Physisch wird ihnen die Lebensgrundlage durch die Zerstörung der Natur entzogen, gleichzeitig droht durch die Verdrängung und Zerstörung ihrer Kultur ihr Verschwinden als Gemeinschaft. Im Bemühen, indigenen Gruppen eine Stimme zu geben, hinterfragt die Filmemacherin ihre Position als Aussenstehende, als die sie kein Recht zu haben glaubt, für die Gemeinschaften zu sprechen: «I’m trying to avoid speaking on behalf of the other.» Dabei spielt auch ihr akademischer und beruflicher Hintergrund als Journalistin, Fotografin und Ethnografin eine Rolle, davon ausgehend denkt sie über ihre Rolle als Filmemacherin, aber auch breiter über die Rolle der Ethnografin und der Künstlerin in der Gesellschaft nach.

Letters from Panduranga and How to Improve the World focus on indigenous communities and their looming extinction. Physically, they are deprived of their livelihoods through the destruction of nature, at the same, their disappearance as a community is impending as their culture is being suppressed and destroyed. Trying to give indigenous groups a voice, the filmmaker questions her position as an outsider, believing she has no right to speak for them: “I’m trying to avoid speaking on behalf of the other.” Here, her academic and professional background as a journalist, photographer and ethnographer come into play, reflecting on her role as a filmmaker, but also more broadly on the role of the ethnographer and the artist in society.
