The project “CIRCULAR HEROES” is a collaboration between fashion designer Rafael Kouto and Peter D. Abayomi‘s Eran Jije Project, focusing on portraying local Nigerian teenagers from the Isale Akoka area in Bariga as key players in the circular economy. Bariga, known for its floating homes and innovative recycling practices, sees its residents transform waste materials into practical uses, contributing significantly to sustainability efforts.

The project by Kouto and Abayomi, photographed by Ruby Okoro, includes workshops to raise awareness and pride in these young people’s efforts, with scarves created in collaboration with local Lagos artisans.

14–18:00

Workshop

The first iterations of the Circular Heroes workshop were hosted by Rafael Kouto in collaboration with Peter D. Abayomi of the Eran Jije Studio in Bariga and at G.A.S. Foundation in Lagos, Nigeria. The participants will receive instructions on methods such as embroidery, applique, and weaving, and experimentally apply them to pre-made printed textiles aiming to visualize waste objects as “activated objects” and portraying local Nigerian teenagers from the Isale Akoka area in Bariga as key players in the circular economy.
